A Poison Tree - Note & Meaning
wrath = extreme anger/angry 愤怒
foe = enamy / opponent 敌人/对手
deceitful = full of lies/crafty/cunning狡诈,狡猾
nourished = 施肥,滋养
suspicious = 怀疑
hatred = 仇恨
beheld = saw
bore = Till it bore an apple bright. And my foe beheld it shine. And he knew that it was mine, Because of the speaker's efforts, his plant (anger) eventually bears ("bore") fruit: an "apple bright."
The apple, then, represents the anger which was not resolved and then grew into something that caused death. Eating fruit from a poisonous tree is a famous theme in literature, even fairy tales.
